Generic bookkeeping works fine for a lot of businesses. It doesn't work particularly well for a chiropractic practice, and the reason comes down to something simple: understanding the numbers requires understanding how the practice actually generates them.
A bookkeeper who doesn't understand insurance billing doesn't automatically know why a big gap between charges and collections isn't a red flag, it's just how contracted rates work. Someone who's never dealt with a practice's payer mix doesn't naturally think to flag a slow-paying insurer as a cash flow risk worth watching closely, the way we've talked about this month. Someone unfamiliar with how associate compensation typically gets structured doesn't automatically know why a percentage-of-collections arrangement needs to be calculated off actual collections rather than billed charges.
None of this is about generic bookkeeping being done badly. It's about generic bookkeeping missing the context that turns raw numbers into decisions you can actually act on. A categorized transaction is correct or incorrect regardless of industry knowledge. But knowing that a spike in accounts receivable might mean a batch of claims is genuinely just working through a normal reimbursement cycle, versus knowing it might mean claims are getting denied and nobody's following up, that distinction requires understanding how insurance billing actually works.
This is part of why 911 Bookkeepers works the way we do. We're not learning the insurance-based service business model from scratch while we're supposed to be managing your books. Whether it's a practice or a trades business, the pattern is the same: revenue that doesn't arrive the moment the work happens, and books that need to reflect that reality instead of pretending it doesn't exist.
If your current bookkeeping feels technically accurate but somehow still disconnected from how your practice actually runs day to day, that disconnect is usually exactly this kind of industry gap.
